Landing Of Cpr Locomotive No. 1 And Train Of 6 Flat Cars And Van In Winnipeg, Called The "Countess Of Dufferin". This Was The First Engine And Train To Land In Manitoba. It Was Brought From Moorhead, Mn, By Steamer Ship "Selkirk" With Barges And Unloaded At The Mouth Of The Seine River For Construction Of Cpr East From Winnipeg. There Was No Rail Connection With The Rest Of The Continent And Manitoba Until December 1878 |

Photo Of The Landing Of Winnipeg'S First Locomotive, The Countess Of Dufferin And 6 Flat Cars And Caboose Aboard A Red River Barge, From An Illustration By F.G. Sheppard. The Arrival Of The Countess Of Dufferin Was An Event In History Of Winnipeg. Note The City Fathers Decked Out In Top Hats And Morning Coats Meeting The Barge With The Locomotive The Countess Of Dufferin. A Public Holiday Was Declared And A Special Issue Of The Manitoba Free Press Appeared On Streets. This Locomotive Was Used On The Pembina Branch, And Gave Winnipeg Its First Railway Connection With Ontario By Way Of St. Paul, Mn. Winnipeg Now Had A Regular Communication Link With The Outside World. (Colour) |
